Liverpool are reportedly stepping up their summer transfer plans as the club prepares for a significant new chapter at Anfield. With uncertainty surrounding the managerial position, sporting director Richard Hughes is said to be working tirelessly to secure a deal for RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande before the start of the 2026 World Cup.
The transfer speculation comes amid reports that Liverpool have parted ways with Arne Slot after an underwhelming spell in charge. Attention has since turned to finding his replacement, with Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola widely viewed as the leading candidate for the role.
Sources suggest Iraola is edging closer to becoming Liverpool’s next manager after reportedly rejecting approaches from both Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen. The Spaniard is believed to have prioritised the opportunity to manage Liverpool and is said to be keen on taking over at Anfield this summer.
While discussions regarding the managerial appointment continue, Liverpool’s recruitment team is already pushing ahead with plans for the squad. According to reports, Hughes wants Diomande to be among the first marquee additions of the club’s new era.
Liverpool are reportedly eager to finalise a deal before the World Cup begins on June 11, fearing a strong tournament could increase both Diomande’s price tag and the number of clubs competing for his signature.
Talks between the club and the player’s representatives are believed to be ongoing, with the Ivory Coast international reportedly open to the move. Diomande is said to view Liverpool as one of football’s biggest institutions and is attracted by the prospect of playing a major role in the club’s rebuild.
However, negotiations are expected to be challenging. RB Leipzig are reportedly determined to keep hold of the 19-year-old and have placed a valuation of at least €100 million on the winger. The German side regard him as one of Europe’s most exciting young attacking prospects and are unwilling to let him leave cheaply.
Despite the sizeable fee, reports claim Liverpool’s owners, FSG, are willing to sanction a deal if they believe Diomande is the right long-term investment. Should the move go through at that figure, it would make him the most expensive Ivorian player ever.
That record is currently held by Nicolas Pepe following his €80 million move from Lille to Arsenal in 2019. Liverpool reportedly see Diomande as a player capable of justifying an even larger investment due to his immense potential.
The youngster is also being viewed as a possible successor to Mohamed Salah, whose future at Anfield remains uncertain. Replacing a player of Salah’s stature is considered one of Liverpool’s biggest priorities, and club officials reportedly believe Diomande possesses the pace, technical ability and attacking flair needed to develop into one of Europe’s top forwards.
Diomande has previously spoken about his ambitions and acknowledged the growing transfer speculation surrounding him. While he admitted that the figures being discussed are enormous, he also revealed his dream of eventually representing one of Europe’s elite clubs.
The winger explained that his career has progressed rapidly, recalling his journey from Leganés to RB Leipzig and his determination to keep climbing to higher levels in the game.
He also reflected on a difficult period earlier in his career when he went on trial with several clubs, including Chelsea, Rangers, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Olympiacos. Although many of those opportunities reportedly went well, permanent contracts failed to materialise.
Diomande even revealed that he spoke with Mauricio Pochettino during his time at Chelsea, but despite encouraging performances, a move never happened. The repeated disappointments eventually left him frustrated and close to abandoning the trial route altogether.
Instead, he chose stability and focused on earning a professional contract with Leganés, a decision that proved pivotal in his development and ultimately paved the way for his move to Leipzig.
Now regarded as one of Europe’s brightest young talents, Diomande is being linked with one of the biggest transfers of the summer. If Liverpool succeed in securing his signature, it would send a powerful message about the club’s ambitions heading into a new era.
With a managerial change looming, Salah potentially moving on, and Liverpool targeting one of football’s most exciting young stars, the Reds appear determined to rebuild quickly and return to competing for the biggest honours.
