Mikel Arteta Reacts After Arsenal Suffer Shock 3-0 Defeat to Brighton
Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season came crashing down on Saturday as Brighton produced a dominant display to beat the Gunners 3-0 on the south coast.
Pascal Gross and Charalampos Kostoulas struck from distance in the first half before summer signing Chema Andres added a third with a close-range header shortly before the hour mark.
Speaking after the defeat, Mikel Arteta admitted Arsenal were far below the level required.
“Very disappointing,” Arteta said, stressing that his team failed to match Brighton’s intensity, particularly in the duels and second balls.
The Arsenal boss acknowledged that his side spent too much of the game under pressure and failed to take their opportunities when they came. He described the result as a “big lesson” for his players.
Arteta also praised Brighton for their approach, admitting that Arsenal were exposed because they failed to execute the basics required to compete at Premier League level.
Brighton’s aggressive pressing caused Arsenal major problems, with the Seagulls constantly forcing mistakes and preventing the Gunners from building comfortably from the back.
When Brighton weren’t pressing high, they dropped deep and defended in numbers, leaving Arsenal struggling to find space in the final third.
Pascal Gross said Brighton were determined to finish strongly before the international break, while manager Fabian Hurzeler highlighted intensity and winning individual battles as key factors behind the victory.
The defeat gives Arteta plenty to think about, particularly after Arsenal had looked so strong during the opening weeks of the campaign.
