Fabrizio Romano has delivered a major update on Curtis Jones’ Liverpool future, confirming that Inter Milan have reached an agreement to sign the midfielder.
Inter had been pursuing the 25-year-old throughout the summer, with their initial £21.7m proposal rejected by Liverpool. The Reds were originally seeking around £34m, although Jones’ valuation was later reported to have dropped to approximately £30m.
Romano has now given the deal his famous “Here we go” confirmation, revealing that Inter have agreed a package worth €35m (£30m) with Liverpool. An agreement has also been reached with the player, while his medical is expected to be scheduled soon.
The move would bring an end to Jones’ 16-year journey with Liverpool, having joined the club’s academy as a youngster. His absence from recent friendlies against Monaco and Como had already fuelled speculation that he was heading for the Anfield exit.
Liverpool appear to have decided to cash in now rather than risk losing Jones for nothing when his contract expires next year. However, the £30m fee could still raise questions, considering his experience, Premier League title-winning pedigree and more than 200 appearances for the club.
With Jones reportedly keen on a move to Italy, Liverpool may have felt selling him was the best option rather than keeping an unhappy player. His departure will undoubtedly disappoint supporters, particularly with the new season approaching, but the transfer now appears increasingly close to completion.
