Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Sandro Tonali has sparked fresh debate after a Premier League pundit dismissed the idea of the Newcastle United midfielder making a move to North London.
Spurs are reportedly exploring a major deal for the Italian international, with suggestions they could even break their transfer record to secure his signature. The club’s interest is being driven in part by manager Roberto De Zerbi’s strong relationship with Tonali, which is believed to have helped open communication between both parties. Early talks are said to have been positive, raising Tottenham’s confidence in a potential agreement.
However, the situation has been met with scepticism from some quarters. Speaking on talkSPORT, pundit Simon Jordan strongly rejected the idea that Tonali would view Tottenham as a step forward in his career. He argued that Newcastle’s long-term project and competitive ambitions remain more attractive, suggesting Spurs may struggle to convince the midfielder to switch clubs.
Transfer valuations are also shaping negotiations, with reports indicating Newcastle value Tonali at around €85 million (£74 million), while Tottenham’s current approach is believed to be closer to €75 million (£65 million). Club-to-club discussions are ongoing, according to respected journalists including David Ornstein.
Despite Tottenham’s growing confidence, they are not alone in the race. Arsenal and Manchester City are also monitoring the situation closely, with both clubs reportedly considering midfield reinforcements this summer. That competition could significantly complicate Spurs’ hopes of completing the deal.
For now, Tonali’s future remains open, with multiple top Premier League sides still in contention and no final decision expected in the immediate term.
