DONE DEAL! Tottenham Reach Verbal Agreement to Secure Star Defender on New Long-Term Contract
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reached a full verbal agreement with Micky van de Ven over a new long-term contract, with the Dutch defender now edging closer to putting pen to paper.
According to reports from BBC Sport, The Athletic and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Van de Ven is expected to sign a new five-year deal with improved financial terms. While the final paperwork is still being completed, an agreement has reportedly been reached and an official announcement could follow soon.
The development comes shortly after Pedro Porro’s contract renewal and underlines Tottenham’s determination to keep the key players at the heart of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans.
Van de Ven, who joined Spurs from Wolfsburg in 2023, has quickly established himself as one of the Premier League’s standout centre-backs. His exceptional pace, recovery ability, composure on the ball and quality when playing out from the back have made him a hugely important figure in Tottenham’s defence.
His time at Spurs has not been without difficulties, however. The 2025/26 season was particularly challenging for the club, with poor results, injuries, suspensions and managerial instability contributing to a difficult campaign. Van de Ven also endured his own fitness problems, including recurring hamstring issues, as well as a suspension following a red card.
The defender has previously spoken about the mental pressure surrounding Tottenham’s difficult season and revealed that he temporarily stepped away from social media to maintain his focus. He also stood up for his teammates amid criticism of the squad’s performances and commitment.
Despite speculation surrounding his future, Tottenham have consistently viewed Van de Ven as an important part of their long-term plans. With Cristian Romero now departing, the new contract could pave the way for the Dutchman to become the main leader of Spurs’ defence.
With his extraordinary speed, defensive intelligence and technical ability, Van de Ven is widely regarded as one of Tottenham’s most valuable assets. If Spurs are serious about challenging at the top again, keeping him fit and at the heart of the defence could prove crucial to De Zerbi’s new era in north London.
