Jamie Carragher has criticised Liverpool’s lack of preparation after noticing something concerning immediately after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off during Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield.
Gravenberch received a second yellow card in the 62nd minute for a foul on Jeremy Doku, leaving Liverpool with 10 men. However, Carragher was left frustrated by what happened next.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, the Liverpool legend questioned why a substitute was not ready to enter the pitch immediately after the dismissal.
Carragher pointed out that manager Andoni Iraola was seen calling Trey Nyoni back, but the young midfielder was apparently not prepared to come on straight away.
“We’re at the elite level here. There’s nothing higher in terms of football,” Carragher remarked, insisting that the situation needed to be sorted out much quicker.
Former manager Steve Cooper acknowledged that such situations can happen, but admitted they can be a nightmare for coaches.
Nyoni eventually replaced Florian Wirtz, but Manchester City had already taken advantage of Liverpool’s numerical disadvantage, with Erling Haaland scoring just three minutes after Gravenberch’s dismissal.
Meanwhile, Iraola questioned the referee’s decision to give Gravenberch his first yellow card, arguing that Liverpool had been the better side before the sending-off changed the game.
🔥 Was Carragher right to criticise Liverpool’s lack of readiness, or was the manager too distracted by the controversial red card?
