Liverpool fans were already frustrated before their team suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, and Bradley Barcola’s performance only added to the anger among supporters at Anfield.
With the spotlight firmly on City following the controversy surrounding their financial charges, Sunday’s encounter was expected to be one of the biggest games of the season. However, the first half failed to deliver much excitement, with clear-cut chances limited for both sides.
The match took a dramatic turn after the break when referee Chris Kavanagh sent off Ryan Gravenberch for a second bookable offence. Liverpool supporters were furious with the decision, believing the challenge that earned him his first yellow card was relatively soft.
City capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Erling Haaland breaking the deadlock in the 65th minute with an excellent finish. Just three minutes later, Jeremy Doku doubled the visitors’ lead with a stunning strike before Rayan Cherki added a third ten minutes later to complete a miserable afternoon for Andoni Iraola’s side.
Gravenberch’s dismissal proved to be a major turning point, transforming what had been a competitive contest into a comfortable victory for City. Nevertheless, Liverpool had opportunities to make their mark before the game slipped away, and some players failed to take advantage of them.
One player attracting particularly strong criticism was Bradley Barcola.
The French winger arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in a reported £123 million deal, with expectations that he would immediately strengthen the left side of Iraola’s attack. However, his latest performance has raised further questions about his difficult start to life at Anfield.
Barcola struggled to make a meaningful impact, often appearing hesitant when presented with opportunities to attack. Manchester City’s Matheus Nunes dealt with him comfortably, limiting the winger’s influence throughout the contest.
With Alexander Isak, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo unavailable, the match presented Barcola with an opportunity to step up when Liverpool needed him most. Unfortunately, he failed to deliver the kind of performance supporters were hoping to see.
Florian Wirtz also struggled to convince, with the German midfielder once again finding it difficult to influence the game. Both players arrived at Liverpool with enormous expectations, and their expensive transfer fees have only intensified the scrutiny surrounding their performances.
Following the final whistle, Liverpool supporters took to social media to express their disappointment with Barcola.
One frustrated fan described him as Liverpool’s worst performer by a considerable distance, arguing that he repeatedly failed to take on Nunes despite having opportunities to do so.
Another supporter was left almost speechless by the winger’s display, simply writing: “Barcola man… lost for words.”
A third fan pleaded for even the smallest contribution from the Frenchman, saying they were now asking for very little from him.
Others were equally unimpressed, with one supporter bluntly declaring that Barcola had been very poor throughout the match.
Another fan offered a more detailed assessment, criticising both Barcola and Wirtz for failing to make the most of their opportunities, particularly with several important players missing from the team.
The defeat to Manchester City will undoubtedly raise further questions about Liverpool’s attacking performances, but Barcola now faces increasing pressure to justify the expectations that came with his big-money move.
With supporters already growing impatient, the French winger will need to respond on the pitch if he hopes to win them over.
