Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola has praised Alex Scott, saying the Bournemouth midfielder “deserved” his first official call-up to the England senior squad for the upcoming international break.
Scott, 23, spent three years working under Iraola at Bournemouth, developing from a promising young player into an established starter. During that time, his reputation continued to grow as he impressed in the Premier League and showed his versatility by playing as a defensive midfielder, a No. 8 and even in a more advanced No. 10 role.
His progress has naturally attracted transfer interest, with less than two years remaining on his current Bournemouth contract. Several clubs have reportedly been monitoring the midfielder in recent months.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with Scott, with the possibility of a reunion with Iraola previously raising speculation. Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal have also been linked with an interest in the midfielder.
Bournemouth have appeared determined to keep hold of Scott, but if he does not agree a new contract in the coming months, the club could face increasing pressure to consider a sale. Liverpool could be among the clubs ready to make a move.
For now, Scott’s focus will be on continuing his development. His impressive form has earned him his first official England call-up after previously featuring in a warm-up squad ahead of the summer World Cup.
Scott was joined by Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha during that period, and both players have now been called into the senior England squad. Asked about their progress, Iraola expressed his delight.
He told the press: “Very happy, both Alex Scott and Rio Ngumoha deserve it. They helped the national team before the World Cup and did a good job. I can only speak so well about both. Deserved, they are ready.”
It remains to be seen how much playing time Scott and Ngumoha will receive during the upcoming fixtures. England are scheduled to face Spain and Croatia, as well as having a double-header against the Czech Republic during the extended international break.
The busy fixture schedule could provide opportunities for both players to make an impression and further raise their profiles.
Liverpool supporters already know what Ngumoha can offer, while Iraola’s comments provide an interesting insight into Scott ahead of any potential future transfer.
Whether Scott eventually ends up at Anfield remains uncertain, but the midfielder is continuing to demonstrate his ability to perform at the highest level while still having plenty of room to develop further.
