Liverpool have received a welcome boost ahead of Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup clash with Tottenham, as Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that Richarlison will not be involved at Anfield.
Although the Brazilian is eligible to feature in the competition, Tottenham have decided to leave him out following the fallout from his failed attempt to secure a move away from the club during the summer.
When De Zerbi was asked whether the 29-year-old could make a return against Liverpool, his answer was brief and decisive: “No.”
The Spurs boss revealed that he had spoken with Richarlison several times at the start of the season in an attempt to persuade him to remain at Tottenham. However, the forward made it clear that his preference was to leave.
His absence will undoubtedly be welcomed by Liverpool supporters, given Richarlison’s record against the Reds. Five of his six goals against Liverpool have come at Anfield, including two dramatic late equalising goals for Spurs.
The Brazilian was also at the centre of controversy during last season’s reverse fixture following an incident involving Hugo Ekitike and a heated goal celebration.
With De Zerbi confirming that Richarlison will remain out of the squad, Liverpool have one less familiar threat to deal with when Spurs arrive at Anfield. 🔴
