Man City were deceived into paying £400k to an EFL club for a Liverpool Champions League winner.

Posted on January 28, 2025January 28, 2025 By Dailynewsupdate No Comments on Man City were deceived into paying £400k to an EFL club for a Liverpool Champions League winner.

No one could fault Manchester City if they sought a refund for a former Champions League winner.

Following a disappointing 2005/06 season, where they finished 15th in the Premier League, City urgently needed reinforcements to avoid a repeat of such poor results.

Their decline was even more concerning after finishing eighth the previous season, making it clear that further setbacks were not an option.

Under manager Stuart Pearce, City focused on signing experienced players during the summer of 2006. Paul Dickov returned for a second spell, Ousmane Dabo was signed from Lazio, and former Italian international Bernardo Corradi joined from Valencia. Additionally, a young Joe Hart was acquired from Shrewsbury Town for an estimated £756,000.

However, none of these signings matched the pedigree of Dietmar “Didi” Hamann. With two Bundesliga titles, two FA Cups, and a Champions League trophy under his belt, Hamann brought a winning mentality.

The midfielder had played a crucial role in Liverpool’s iconic 2005 Champions League final victory over AC Milan, even converting a penalty in the shootout despite having a broken foot. However, during the 2005/06 season, he made just 17 league appearances for Liverpool—his lowest since joining the club in 1999.

With his playing opportunities dwindling, Hamann decided to leave Anfield to continue his career. Though several clubs expressed interest, it was Sam Allardyce’s Bolton Wanderers that initially secured his signature.
