Liverpool began their Champions League campaign under Andoni Iraola with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
Atletico took the lead in the first half through Marcos Llorente, who continued his impressive scoring record at Anfield. Liverpool responded just before halftime when Ronald Araujo’s clever touch found Dominik Szoboszlai inside the box, with the Hungarian making no mistake to beat Jan Oblak.
The contest remained evenly matched after the break, but Liverpool eventually found the decisive moment. Alexis Mac Allister produced a powerful left-footed strike to put the Reds ahead and secure all three points.
🇪🇸 Spanish Media Question Liverpool’s Performance
Despite the victory, sections of the Spanish press were far from impressed with Liverpool’s display.
Marca suggested that the current Liverpool side is considerably less intimidating than the teams seen in recent European campaigns. The publication argued that Atletico had opportunities to control the game but ultimately allowed their advantage to disappear.
Marca also questioned Liverpool’s equaliser, suggesting the goal came more from Atletico’s own mistakes than from sustained pressure or superior play by Iraola’s team.
The Spanish outlet further claimed that Atletico became increasingly disorganised as the match progressed, which ultimately worked in Liverpool’s favour.
⚠️ Szoboszlai Faces Accusation
Liverpool’s physical approach also attracted criticism from Mundo Deportivo columnist Walter Zimmermann.
Zimmermann accused Liverpool of being overly aggressive toward Atletico midfielder Lee Kang-in, pointing to challenges from Alexis Mac Allister and Virgil van Dijk.
He made an even stronger allegation regarding Szoboszlai, claiming the Liverpool midfielder struck Lee in the face after an earlier challenge.
Liverpool will now turn their attention to their next Champions League fixture, with Iraola’s side set to travel to Austria to face LASK. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, will host Manchester United at the Metropolitano.
