Liverpool Identify Newcastle Star as Potential Virgil van Dijk Replacement

Liverpool Identify Newcastle Defender as Potential Virgil van Dijk Successor

Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on Newcastle United centre-back Malick Thiaw as they prepare for a major defensive transition in 2027.

The 25-year-old Germany international has impressed since joining Newcastle from AC Milan in 2025, becoming an important part of Matthias Jaissle’s defence.

According to a CaughtOffside exclusive, Liverpool have identified Thiaw as one of their possible options to eventually replace Virgil van Dijk, although Manchester United are also believed to be monitoring the defender.

There have been no negotiations or direct discussions between the clubs at this stage, but both Liverpool and United are expected to continue watching Thiaw throughout the season.

Liverpool’s interest is understandable. Van Dijk remains a key figure for the Reds, but with the Dutchman now 35, the club must begin preparing for the future.

Ronald Araujo is currently on loan from Barcelona and could potentially make his move to Anfield permanent, yet Liverpool may still want another experienced centre-back capable of becoming a long-term defensive leader.

Manchester United could also be in the market for defensive reinforcements, with question marks surrounding the futures of Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt.

However, Newcastle are expected to make any potential deal difficult. The Magpies reportedly have no plans to sell Thiaw and could demand a fee in the region of £65m–£70m.

Thiaw’s profile makes him an attractive option for Liverpool. Standing at 6ft 4in, he offers considerable physical presence and aerial ability while also possessing the pace needed to defend large spaces behind an aggressive defensive line.

His Premier League experience could also be a major advantage, meaning Liverpool would not be signing a player who still needs to adapt to English football.

A potential partnership between Thiaw and Araujo could provide Liverpool with a formidable foundation for the post-Van Dijk era, with both defenders offering strength, pace and one-on-one defensive ability.

The major concern would be the transfer cost.

Spending around £70m on Thiaw, particularly if Liverpool also trigger Araujo’s reported £47m permanent-transfer option, would represent a significant investment.

Nevertheless, finding a long-term replacement for a player as influential as Van Dijk was always going to come at a considerable price.
