Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has backed Roberto De Zerbi to transform Spurs’ fortunes, predicting the North London club will return to the Premier League’s top six after narrowly avoiding relegation in back-to-back seasons.
“Spurs Escaped by the Skin of Their Teeth”
Redknapp did not hide his disappointment with Tottenham’s recent performances, describing the team as “absolutely shocking” and insisting they were fortunate to stay in the Premier League. He highlighted a crucial victory over a heavily rotated Aston Villa side late in the campaign as the result that ultimately helped Spurs survive.
Recruitment Under Fire
The former Spurs boss also criticised the club’s recruitment over recent years, arguing that huge sums have been spent on players who have failed to justify their price tags. According to Redknapp, Tottenham’s transfer strategy has been poor, and he believes significant changes to the squad are needed if the club is to move forward.
Full Confidence in De Zerbi
Despite his concerns over the current squad, Redknapp is convinced De Zerbi is the right man to lead the rebuild. He praised the Italian’s passion, high standards and winning mentality, saying he expects the new manager to demand much more from his players. Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp revealed that former Brighton midfielder Adam Lallana had spoken highly of De Zerbi, describing him as an outstanding coach to work under.
Predicting a Strong Revival
Redknapp believes Tottenham are capable of finishing in the Premier League’s top six next season, and even suggested a top-five finish is possible if De Zerbi’s project takes off quickly. He pointed to the club’s world-class stadium, excellent training facilities and expected transfer investment as key reasons for optimism.
With new arrivals already strengthening the squad and more signings expected, Redknapp is confident De Zerbi can restore Tottenham to competing near the top of the table and ensure they never find themselves battling relegation again.
