Gary Neville Fires Warning at Jamie Carragher During Heated Debate Over Liverpool Icon

Gary Neville Warns Jamie Carragher Over Roberto Firmino Comment During Heated Sky Sports Debate

Gary Neville hit back at Jamie Carragher during a heated Sky Sports discussion after the Liverpool legend appeared to downplay Roberto Firmino’s influence at Anfield.

The former Manchester United defender strongly defended Firmino when the Brazilian was brought into a debate about Arsenal’s attacking options ahead of their clash with Chelsea.

Neville and Carragher, alongside Daniel Sturridge, were discussing Kai Havertz and whether Arsenal would benefit from having a more prolific striker leading the line.

Neville argued that Bukayo Saka could become even more dangerous if Arsenal had a top-class goalscorer playing through the middle. He suggested that having players such as Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez alongside Saka would create more space and chances for the England international.

Carragher disagreed with Neville’s argument and pointed to Liverpool’s attacking setup during Firmino’s time at the club, insisting that his presence did not prevent Mohamed Salah from scoring heavily.

That comparison prompted a strong response from Neville, who urged Carragher not to underestimate what Firmino brought to Liverpool.

Neville emphasised that Firmino was far more than just a goalscorer, describing him as an essential player who provided the perfect link between Salah and Sadio Mane.

Carragher then questioned why Havertz could not perform a similar role, but Neville was adamant that the German forward does not match Firmino’s quality.

Neville made it clear that, in his view, Firmino was on another level entirely and that comparing the two forwards was unfair to the former Liverpool star.

Firmino enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Anfield, scoring 111 goals in 362 appearances and playing a key role in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in 2019 and Premier League title victory in 2020.

Interestingly, Carragher has previously praised Firmino himself. In 2018, the former Liverpool defender described him as one of the Premier League’s most underrated attackers and said his work off the ball and ability to bring teammates into the game made him one of Liverpool’s most important players.
