Curtis Jones Reveals Why He Really Chose to Leave Liverpool for Inter Milan
Curtis Jones has opened up about the real reasons behind his decision to leave Liverpool and join Inter Milan this summer, with the midfielder revealing that manager Cristian Chivu played a major role in convincing him to make the move.
The 25-year-old Liverpool academy graduate ended his 16-year association with the Reds after completing a £30 million transfer to the Serie A giants. Having joined Liverpool at just nine years old, Jones spent the majority of his career at Anfield before beginning a new chapter in Italy.
So far, the move has worked out well. Jones has made an impressive start to life at Inter and played an important role in their dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Napoli at San Siro on Saturday.
Following the match, Jones explained what attracted him to Inter and highlighted his relationship with Chivu as one of the biggest factors behind his decision.
He said the conversations he had with the manager, Inter’s style of play, Chivu’s tactical approach and the way he works with his players every day all convinced him that Inter was the right destination.
Jones also praised Chivu’s experience, saying the manager’s small comments and advice can have a significant impact. He added that Chivu’s background as a former top-level player gives him an important connection with the squad.
The midfielder also revealed that he has quickly settled into the Inter dressing room.
Jones said he feels comfortable around his new teammates and believes being able to play naturally and remain himself will help him win over the players, coaching staff and supporters.
During his time at Liverpool, Jones made 228 appearances and scored 22 goals after progressing through the club’s academy.
His new adventure in Italy began with a substitute appearance in Inter’s win over Cagliari before he was introduced at half-time against Napoli. His arrival helped Inter turn the game around and complete an impressive comeback, keeping them near the top of the early Serie A standings.
Jones was also quick to dismiss the idea that Italian football lacks excitement, pointing to the Napoli clash as evidence of the quality and tactical intensity in Serie A.
He praised the coaches and tactical changes made during the match, describing the encounter as a spectacular game filled with chances.
The midfielder will now turn his attention to the Champions League, with Inter preparing to begin their European campaign against Real Madrid during the week.
Liverpool will also face Spanish opposition in their European opener, hosting Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
Jones was one of several notable departures from Liverpool during the summer. Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andrew Robertson all left the club as free agents, while Harvey Elliott joined Valencia on a season-long loan.
