Tottenham Hotspur endured a nightmare start to the new Premier League campaign, suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat away to Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium. Roberto De Zerbi’s side struggled to match their opponents throughout, creating very little while being repeatedly exposed by a confident Brentford team.
The defeat was particularly disappointing after the optimism generated by Tottenham’s busy summer transfer window. Instead of building on that momentum, Spurs’ opening performance raised serious questions about De Zerbi’s team selection, with Lucas Bergvall receiving much of the criticism.
The Spurs boss took a gamble by handing the 20-year-old Swedish midfielder a starting role, despite having Mateus Fernandes and Rodrigo Bentancur available on the bench as more experienced options. The decision quickly backfired. Bergvall endured a difficult opening 45 minutes and was one of two Tottenham players withdrawn at half-time as De Zerbi attempted to change the course of the game.
Shearer criticises Bergvall’s costly mistake
Bergvall’s biggest mistake came during the buildup to Brentford’s second goal. Under pressure close to his own penalty area, he challenged Mathias Jensen in a 50-50 situation. Rather than making a decisive challenge, Bergvall attempted to use his technique to move the ball away.
The attempt failed, allowing Jensen to advance into Tottenham’s penalty area. His effort was blocked, but Vitaly Janelt reacted quickest to the rebound and fired Brentford into a 2-0 lead.
Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer was highly critical of Bergvall’s involvement, describing the midfielder’s attempt as poor and questioning his lack of commitment in the challenge. His criticism reflected the frustration surrounding the incident, particularly because the error came at such an important moment and directly contributed to Brentford extending their advantage.
Bergvall’s numbers make for difficult reading
Bergvall was certainly not solely responsible for Tottenham’s defeat, with the entire team struggling to perform at the required level. However, his individual statistics highlighted just how ineffective his performance was.
According to FotMob, the midfielder created no chances, registered no shots on target and completed only one pass into the final third. He was also credited with an error that led directly to a goal and managed just one touch inside Brentford’s penalty area.
His overall involvement was limited, with only 27 touches before being substituted at half-time. He completed one successful dribble, was dispossessed once and failed to find a teammate with his only attempted cross. Defensively, he won just one tackle and prevailed in only two of his four ground duels.
For a player regarded as one of Tottenham’s most exciting young talents, it was a hugely frustrating outing.
De Zerbi faces a selection dilemma
The performance comes at an interesting time, particularly after De Zerbi recently reiterated his belief in Bergvall despite speculation surrounding the midfielder’s future.
The Swedish youngster remains highly regarded within the club, but his display at Brentford could force the manager to reconsider how quickly he should be introduced into the starting XI on a regular basis.
At only 20 years old, Bergvall should not be judged solely on one poor performance. Young midfielders often require time to adapt to the physical intensity, speed and tactical demands of Premier League football.
However, Tottenham’s ambitions under De Zerbi are high, and the manager will need reliable performances rather than simply potential. With Fernandes and Bentancur waiting for opportunities, Bergvall will have to show much more if he wants to keep his place.
Charlton offers Bergvall a chance to respond
Bergvall could get an immediate opportunity to put the Brentford disappointment behind him when Tottenham face Charlton Athletic in the League Cup.
The fixture gives him a chance to regain confidence and demonstrate why De Zerbi trusted him from the beginning against Brentford. A strong performance could also reassure the manager that his poor showing was simply an isolated setback.
Things become much more difficult the following weekend when Newcastle United travel to N17. If Bergvall struggles again against Charlton, De Zerbi may think twice about immediately throwing him back into another demanding Premier League fixture, particularly with Fernandes and Bentancur competing for midfield minutes.
For now, there is little reason to believe Bergvall’s long-term future at Tottenham is in danger. Nevertheless, after a performance that attracted strong criticism from Shearer and frustrated supporters, the young midfielder needs to respond quickly.
Tottenham’s defeat was ultimately a collective failure, but Bergvall’s costly mistake and limited influence made him one of the biggest talking points of the afternoon. How he reacts in the next few matches could play a major role in determining how much faith De Zerbi places in him at the start of the season.
