FA issues statement following decision on Myles Lewis-Skelly’s suspension after Arsenal’s appeal

An independent FA panel has delivered its final decision regarding Arsenal’s appeal of Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card during their 1-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday.

Lewis-Skelly was issued a straight red card in the first half for serious foul play against Wolves defender Matt Doherty. Referee Michael Oliver made the decision on the field, around 10 yards from Wolves’ penalty area. The incident was reviewed by VAR official Darren England, who, after multiple replays, did not recommend overturning the decision.

Arsenal submitted their appeal before the Tuesday noon deadline, and the FA panel has now ruled in their favor. As a result, Lewis-Skelly’s three-match suspension has been overturned, allowing him to participate in Arsenal’s upcoming domestic matches.

An FA statement confirmed: “An Independent Regulatory Commission has upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal in relation to Myles Lewis-Skelly and removed his three-match suspension. The Arsenal player was sent off for serious foul play during their Premier League fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, January 25th.”

Meanwhile, it was revealed that Michael Oliver faced abuse following the match, including death threats directed at him and his family. According to reports, police visited his home on Sunday as a precautionary measure to ensure their safety.

The red card decision drew criticism from ex-players, pundits, and Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta. Speaking to reporters, Arteta said, “I am absolutely fuming because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help. It’s so clear that I’ll leave it to you, and hopefully, the right thing will happen. I think it’s that obvious that we may not even need to appeal.”
