Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler has finally addressed Jan Paul van Hecke’s high-profile switch to Tottenham following the defender’s big-money move.
Spurs are understandably pleased to have secured the centre-back, completing a £52m transfer to north London. Negotiations with Brighton were tough, with multiple bids turned down before an agreement was eventually reached.
Van Hecke has already expressed his excitement about joining Tottenham next season, although his immediate focus remains on representing the Netherlands at the World Cup.
Hurzeler praises Van Hecke after exit
Tottenham will be confident they’ve landed a top-quality defender, with Van Hecke ranking highly in several key defensive statistics compared to Spurs’ current options. He was also instrumental in a Brighton side that conceded the third-fewest goals in the league last season, making 36 appearances.
Beating Chelsea to his signature is seen as a major win for Spurs, who will be hoping he settles quickly.
Hurzeler has now reflected on the defender’s development, admitting Brighton will feel his absence.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he praised Van Hecke’s progress at the Amex, highlighting his consistency, work ethic, and mentality, while also admitting he will be missed both professionally and personally. He wished the player and his family well for the future.
Spurs shift focus to Tonali
Tottenham are not done in the market, with further signings expected.
After strengthening their defence with Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Van Hecke, Spurs are now turning attention to midfield reinforcements.
Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali has reportedly become their top target, with discussions already underway between both clubs.
However, Newcastle are holding firm after rejecting an initial £80m bid, with the midfielder valued at around £100m — meaning negotiations are still ongoing.
