Liverpool could be preparing for a major midfield rebuild next summer, with Alexis Mac Allister’s future at Anfield becoming an increasingly important issue.
The Argentine midfielder remains a key player under Andoni Iraola and has recently returned to impressive form. However, despite his importance to the team, Liverpool have yet to begin discussions over a new contract.
Mac Allister’s current deal runs until 2028, meaning he could enter the summer of 2027 with just 12 months remaining on his contract.
According to Sky Sport Switzerland, Liverpool are considering making significant changes to their midfield next summer and currently have no intention of offering the 27-year-old a contract extension.
His representatives are reportedly exploring potential opportunities in Spain and Italy, although Mac Allister would prefer to remain at Liverpool.
The uncertainty surrounding his future was previously highlighted by his father and agent, Carlos, who revealed in September that the club had not contacted the family regarding a new deal.
Mac Allister has also expressed disappointment about not receiving a contract extension, admitting that the situation has made him very sad. Nevertheless, he remains committed to giving his best for Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are reportedly keeping an eye on his situation, with manager José Mourinho said to be an admirer of the midfielder.
LIVERPOOL FACE A BIG DECISION OVER MAC ALLISTER
Allowing Mac Allister to approach the final year of his contract without resolving his future could create a difficult situation for Liverpool.
By the summer of 2027, the club will have three major options: offer him a new contract, sell him while he still commands a significant transfer fee, or risk losing control of negotiations.
Replacing the Argentine would not be straightforward. His technical ability, intelligence, composure and versatility make him an important asset in Iraola’s midfield.
Liverpool may believe a midfield overhaul is necessary, but allowing a player of Mac Allister’s quality to leave could prove a costly decision.
With the midfielder reportedly keen to stay at Anfield, Liverpool must decide whether to secure his long-term future or risk attracting serious interest from Europe’s biggest clubs.
