Spurs star delays transfer decision as he waits for a potential Barcelona move after ruling out a Tottenham stay

Cristian Romero Delays Tottenham Exit as He Waits for Potential Barcelona Move

Cristian Romero’s Tottenham future appears increasingly uncertain, with an exit looking likely this summer as Spurs continue negotiations with Atletico Madrid. However, the Argentine centre-back is reportedly refusing to rush into a decision while he waits to see whether Barcelona make a move.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Romero is closely monitoring developments at Barcelona and could hold out for an approach from the Catalan giants if Ronald Araujo’s proposed loan move to Liverpool is completed.

The Tottenham defender has reportedly dreamed of playing for Barcelona for some time, while sporting director Deco is believed to be an admirer of his qualities. However, any decision to sign a new centre-back will ultimately depend on head coach Hansi Flick.

Flick is reportedly satisfied with his current defensive options, with Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin and Andreas Christensen among the senior centre-backs available to him. Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia can also operate in the centre of defence when required, while Alvaro Cortes is being considered as another option.

If Flick eventually decides that another experienced defender is needed, Romero could become one of Barcelona’s leading targets. However, the Catalan club are also keeping tabs on Athletic Club defender Aymeric Laporte, who remains highly rated by the Spanish giants.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are believed to be demanding around €40 million for Romero. Atletico Madrid have reportedly opened negotiations with an offer worth approximately €30 million, meaning the two clubs still have some ground to cover before reaching an agreement.

For now, Romero appears willing to wait rather than immediately commit to Atletico. With Barcelona potentially still an option, the Argentine defender seems keen to see how the situation develops before deciding where his future lies.
