Tottenham Player Ratings vs Coventry: Maddison Impresses as De Zerbi Finally Gets a Much-Needed Victory
Roberto De Zerbi took his Tottenham squad to Marbella last week in an attempt to boost confidence ahead of an important fixture against Coventry City. The decision appeared to pay off early on, as Spurs started brightly and James Maddison gave the home supporters something to celebrate with a brilliant curled finish into the top corner after just 14 minutes.
However, Tottenham struggled to build on their promising start. A costly mistake allowed Jack Rudoni to bring Coventry level, once again exposing Spurs’ defensive weaknesses. Omar Marmoush then put Tottenham back in front with an excellent finish before Ben Davies scored in the 96th minute to secure a 3-1 victory.
Although the result provided De Zerbi with some much-needed relief, Tottenham’s performance still featured a mixture of impressive attacking play and worrying defensive errors.
Maddison Shines on His Return
Jan Paul van Hecke continues to face questions about his consistency and suitability for Tottenham following his arrival from Brighton. Unfortunately, his performance against Coventry did little to silence his critics.
The defender lost possession during the build-up to Rudoni’s equaliser, allowing Coventry to punish a mistake that could have cost Spurs valuable points. He also managed just one tackle and lost two duels.
Tottenham ultimately escaped without suffering a damaging result, but similar mistakes against stronger opposition could prove much more expensive. Van Hecke will need to improve his decision-making and defensive reliability in upcoming matches.
Maddison, meanwhile, delivered a performance that reminded supporters of his quality. Making his first start after an extended spell away from regular first-team football, the 29-year-old immediately made his presence felt by scoring a spectacular opening goal.
He continued to trouble Coventry throughout his 69 minutes on the pitch, winning four fouls and completing six defensive actions while winning four duels. His willingness to contribute defensively was another encouraging aspect of his display.
One performance cannot completely answer questions about his fitness or long-term form, but it offered Tottenham plenty of reasons to be optimistic. If Maddison can remain fit and maintain this level, he could play an important role in De Zerbi’s plans.

Tottenham Get the Result, but Defensive Concerns Remain
Tottenham will be relieved to have secured a victory after another match in which their attacking strengths were accompanied by defensive uncertainty.
Maddison’s impressive opener gave Spurs an ideal start, Marmoush’s finish restored their advantage, and Davies’ late strike ensured they avoided dropping points after conceding an equaliser.
Nevertheless, Van Hecke’s mistake highlighted the defensive improvements still required under De Zerbi. Tottenham cannot afford to keep making costly errors if they want to build momentum and climb the Premier League table.
For now, the three points will provide a welcome confidence boost. The next challenge is to turn this result into the beginning of a more consistent run by combining their attacking quality with greater defensive discipline.
