JAMES MADDISON OPENS UP ABOUT ‘DARK DAYS’ IN EMOTIONAL INTERVIEW AFTER FIRST START IN 536 DAYS

James Maddison has spoken emotionally about the difficult period he endured during his lengthy injury recovery after helping Tottenham Hotspur secure their first Premier League win of the season.

The 29-year-old returned to the starting lineup for the first time since May 2025 on Monday night, playing a key role in Spurs’ impressive 3-1 victory over Coventry City.

Maddison marked his long-awaited return with a stunning goal in the 14th minute, ending his 610-day goal drought with a brilliant first-time finish into the top corner, leaving goalkeeper Carl Rushworth with no chance.

Maddison reveals the toughest period of his career

Speaking after the match, the Tottenham midfielder admitted that his recovery from two serious knee injuries had brought some extremely difficult moments.

He described parts of his rehabilitation as “dark days” and explained that scoring goals and returning to the pitch had given him something to look forward to throughout the challenging process.

Maddison also expressed sympathy for teammate Dejan Kulusevski, who recently returned after a lengthy spell on the sidelines, saying he understood the emotions that come with finally getting back to playing after so much time away.

The England international revealed that he had discussed his return to the starting eleven with manager Roberto De Zerbi, wanting to prove his quality and remind supporters of what he could offer the team after spending so long injured.

Carragher backs Maddison to make a big impact

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was also impressed by Maddison’s performance against Coventry.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Carragher predicted that the midfielder could have a significant influence on Tottenham’s performances in the coming weeks.

He praised Maddison’s personality, leadership qualities and confidence, suggesting that his ability to lift teammates could prove valuable as Spurs attempt to turn their season around.

However, Carragher also noted that Maddison may face competition for a regular starting place, with Tottenham boasting several attacking options, particularly following Kulusevski’s return.

After enduring months of frustration and uncertainty, Maddison will now be hoping to stay fit, build momentum and help Tottenham climb further away from the bottom of the Premier League table.
