UEFA has officially confirmed that Polish referee Szymon Marciniak will officiate Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Villarreal at Anfield on Tuesday night.
The Reds will welcome the Spanish side hoping to maintain their perfect record in this season’s competition after securing victories over Atletico Madrid and LASK.
Villarreal, meanwhile, will be looking to make an impression on their return to Anfield, a stadium they last visited for the Champions League semi-finals in 2022.
👨⚖️ Marciniak appointed for Liverpool’s clash
Marciniak will be assisted by fellow Polish officials Tomasz Listkiewicz and Adam Kupsik. Wojciech Myc will serve as the fourth official, while Piotr Lasyk will handle VAR duties, assisted by Germany’s Benjamin Brand.
📊 A promising record, but there’s a catch!
There is one encouraging statistic for Liverpool fans: Marciniak has refereed seven previous matches involving the Reds, with Liverpool winning five of them.
His most recent Liverpool assignment was their 2-0 victory over Villarreal at Anfield in April 2022, which could be a positive omen ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.
However, the experienced official also has a history that some Liverpool supporters may remember.
During Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain in 2018, Marciniak did not send off Marco Verratti following a high challenge on Joe Gomez.
He also officiated Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in February 2020, a match in which the Spanish side were accused of gamesmanship.
Liverpool supporters will be hoping the referee delivers a fair performance this time around, especially with the Reds aiming to protect their unbeaten start in Europe.
A repeat of the 2-0 victory over Villarreal from 2022 would certainly make the night even sweeter for the Anfield faithful! 🔥🔴
Can Liverpool secure another Champions League victory against Villarreal? 👀
