Tottenham Hotspur could face an important decision over young striker Oliver Irow following his impressive start to life on loan at Plymouth Argyle.
Plymouth manager Tom Cleverley believes the Tottenham youngster has the ability to compete at Championship level next season after making an excellent impression in League One.
Irow has scored four goals in six appearances across all competitions, including three goals in his last two league matches. His impressive performances have helped Plymouth climb to third place in the League One standings.
Cleverley praised the forward’s confidence and quick adaptation to the team, explaining that he has already built a strong connection with his teammates and the club’s supporters. The manager believes the immediate priority is to maintain his progress at Plymouth, with a possible move to the Championship next season looking realistic.
One of Irow’s biggest highlights so far was a spectacular long-range goal against Barnsley, which has been considered among the division’s best strikes this season. His willingness to shoot from distance has also contributed to his growing goal tally.
Remarkably, the youngster has already equalled the four goals he scored during his previous loan spell at Mansfield Town last season.
However, there is another important development: Tottenham have a recall option for January. This means the North London club could bring Irow back midway through the season or potentially arrange another loan move to a higher division to accelerate his development.
Cleverley, who previously played for Manchester United, Aston Villa, Everton and Watford, warned against rushing young players into new environments before they are ready. He pointed to Amario Cozier-Duberry’s development at Bolton before his subsequent move to Middlesbrough as an example of why patience can be important.
For now, both Tottenham and Plymouth are reportedly pleased with Irow’s progress. But with his performances attracting attention, the January transfer window could prove decisive for the youngster’s next step.
Will Tottenham recall Oliver Irow in January, or should they allow him to continue developing at Plymouth? 👀⚪
