Tottenham Make Major U-Turn on Club Name in Decision That Could Affect Broadcasters
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly reversed their previous stance on how broadcasters should refer to the club, marking a significant change in their branding policy.
In February 2025, Spurs sent an email to Premier League broadcasters, including Sky Sports and TNT Sports, requesting that the team be referred to primarily as Tottenham Hotspur, with Spurs accepted as the preferred shortened name.
At the time, the club specifically asked broadcasters to avoid calling them simply “Tottenham”, arguing that the name referred to an area of north London rather than the football club itself.
The instruction formed part of a long-standing branding policy introduced in 2011. The club’s guidelines permitted names such as Tottenham Hotspur, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club and THFC, while discouraging the use of Tottenham, Tottenham Hotspur FC and TH.
Spurs Change Their Stance
However, the north London club now appear to have had a change of heart, with reports suggesting they are embracing the name “Tottenham” once again.
The phrase “This is Tottenham” has appeared around the club’s stadium and on its large screens, signalling a renewed willingness to use the name.
According to The Athletic, the decision followed discussions with supporters, many of whom welcomed the return of a word deeply connected to the club’s identity and local community.
Tottenham reportedly recognise the importance of their north-east London roots, where the team has played since 1882, and want to strengthen that connection with their fans.
It remains unclear whether the latest decision will lead to formal changes in the guidance previously issued to broadcasters.
Spurs are scheduled to return to Premier League action away against Manchester United on Saturday, October 10.
