Souness Suggests Man City Could Lose Titles If Found Guilty
Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has suggested that Manchester City could face severe consequences if the Premier League’s financial case against the club goes against them.
Souness believes City’s legacy could be seriously damaged if they are found guilty of the charges, with the possibility of their titles being retrospectively removed also being discussed.
The former Liverpool midfielder argued that any trophies won during a period in which wrongdoing is established should potentially be reconsidered.
“There’s an argument for Liverpool to have a couple of Premier Leagues given to them,” Souness said, while discussing the potential consequences of City being stripped of honours.
However, the situation is far more complicated than simply handing titles to other clubs.
If Manchester City were stripped of trophies, questions would arise over which clubs should benefit and whether retrospective title changes would properly reflect what happened on the pitch.
Liverpool could have a particular interest in the outcome, having finished runners-up to City during several of the club’s dominant Premier League campaigns under Pep Guardiola.
Souness also pointed to the wider consequences for English football, including clubs and players who may have missed out on financial rewards, opportunities or major honours during City’s successful period.
For now, Manchester City’s case remains unresolved, meaning any potential punishment or changes to past titles would depend on the final outcome of the proceedings.
The debate over City’s legacy—and whether rival clubs such as Liverpool should receive retrospective recognition—could therefore continue for some time.
