Liverpool Eye Ambitious Move for 25-Year-Old Tottenham Star as Iraola Plans Major Rebuild

Liverpool Eye Ambitious Move for Tottenham Defender Micky van de Ven

Liverpool are reportedly monitoring Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven as they begin planning for life beyond Virgil van Dijk.

The 25-year-old Spurs captain has been admired by Liverpool for some time, with his pace, physical strength and left-footed profile making him an attractive option for the Reds’ long-term defensive plans.

Liverpool’s interest comes with Van Dijk approaching the latter stages of his contract, while Tottenham have endured a difficult start to the season under Roberto De Zerbi.

Liverpool Continue to Track Van de Ven

Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown claims Liverpool have kept Van de Ven on their radar and could view him as a potential successor to Van Dijk.

“Van de Ven is somebody who has been on Liverpool’s radar for a long time,” Brown said.

“He would fit the profile when they eventually look to replace Van Dijk because he is left-sided, physically strong and is also the captain at Tottenham.

“There are concerns because he has been part of a Spurs team that has struggled, but his individual quality is obvious.”

Liverpool are reportedly carrying out background work on possible replacements for Van Dijk, whose current contract runs until June 2027.

However, a deal for Van de Ven would not be straightforward.

Tottenham recently strengthened their position by handing the defender a new five-year contract in August before appointing him as club captain for the 2026/27 campaign. Spurs have also indicated that he is an important part of their long-term plans.

Van de Ven made 45 appearances across all competitions last season, including 34 Premier League games, taking his total number of appearances for Tottenham to 96 before the current campaign began.

Tottenham Hold Strong Position

From a tactical perspective, Van de Ven appears to have many of the qualities Liverpool could want in a future replacement for Van Dijk.

His exceptional recovery speed would suit a Liverpool side that often plays with a high defensive line, while his ability to operate on the left side would provide balance during build-up play.

At 25, he is also entering the prime years of his career rather than being signed purely as a development prospect.

However, Tottenham are under little pressure to sell.

The club have recently made Van de Ven captain, tied him down to a long-term contract and identified him as an important figure in their rebuild. Despite Spurs’ difficult start to the season, there is currently no clear reason for them to sanction his departure.

Liverpool could therefore continue monitoring the situation, but any potential transfer would likely require a significant fee and a major change in circumstances.

The defender may fit Liverpool’s plans, but convincing Tottenham to part with their captain could prove to be the biggest challenge.
