Arsenal Fans Turn on Viktor Gyokeres After ‘Unforgivable’ Performance Against Ipswich
Arsenal cruised into the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a convincing 4-2 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Tuesday night.
Max Dowman opened the scoring with a brilliant finish after showing excellent skill around the edge of the box, before Noni Madueke added a second with a powerful strike. Dowman grabbed his second shortly after the restart, while Mikel Merino completed Arsenal’s four-goal haul before the hour mark.
Ipswich managed to respond with two goals through Anis Mehmedi and Chuba Akpom, but Arsenal ultimately secured their place in the next round.
Despite the comfortable victory, one Arsenal player came in for heavy criticism from supporters after failing to impress on his first start of the season.
Mikel Arteta rotated his squad following a busy opening to the campaign, handing starts to several players, including Dowman, Madueke, Merino, Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres.
However, Gyokeres endured a difficult evening. The Swedish striker missed a major opportunity and struggled with his distribution, completing only 9 of his 13 attempted passes during the full 90 minutes.
With Kai Havertz enjoying a strong start to the campaign, Gyokeres had an opportunity to strengthen his case for a regular starting role. Instead, his display left sections of the Arsenal fanbase frustrated.
Some supporters took to social media to criticise the striker, with one fan branding his performance “unforgivable.”
Another supporter claimed Gyokeres was “not at the level” required, while others questioned his movement, involvement and overall contribution.
Despite only joining Arsenal from Sporting CP a year ago and enjoying a productive debut season, some fans are already suggesting that the club should consider his future during the January transfer window.
Arsenal will now turn their attention back to the Premier League, where they face Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Saturday as they look to continue their perfect start to the campaign.
