Andoni Iraola Reveals Why Joe Gomez Was Substituted as Injury Fears Are Eased

Andoni Iraola Clears Up Joe Gomez Substitution as Injury Concerns Are Put to Rest

Andoni Iraola has explained why Joe Gomez was taken off at half-time during Liverpool’s 3-1 Carabao Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.

Gomez had been sidelined since suffering an injury during pre-season, missing the opening weeks of the campaign before making his return against Spurs.

The 29-year-old was handed 45 minutes in Liverpool’s much-changed line-up before Jeremy Jacquet replaced him at the break.

However, Liverpool fans have little reason to worry about another injury setback. Iraola confirmed after the match that the substitution had been part of the plan, with the intention always being to give Gomez around 45 minutes on his comeback.

“He has been recovering very well,” Iraola explained. “With Joe, it made sense. The plan wasn’t to play much more than 45 minutes.”

Gomez looked composed during his return and completed his defensive duties without any obvious problems. He recorded four clearances, two blocks and one interception during his time on the pitch.

After spending several weeks on the sidelines, getting 45 minutes under his belt represents an important step in his return to full fitness.

Gomez may have to settle for a place on the bench when Liverpool travel to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday, with Virgil van Dijk and Jacquet potentially starting in central defence.

Still, his return gives Iraola another defensive option as Liverpool prepare for a demanding run of fixtures following the international break.
