Jamie Carragher clashes with Liverpool FC fans again as past remarks about Mohamed Salah resurface

Jamie Carragher has found himself in another fiery clash with Liverpool FC fans, who labeled the former defender “average” following his recent controversy involving Mohamed Salah.

The ex-player, now a pundit, sparked backlash after placing Salah sixth on his list of Liverpool’s greatest-ever players—behind icons like Steven Gerrard and Kenny Dalglish—despite the Egyptian’s expected exit at the end of the season.

Unhappy fans responded by questioning Carragher’s own legacy at Anfield, with some describing him as “an average centre-back who had standout moments.”

Carragher didn’t stay silent, replying on X by highlighting that he is one of only three Liverpool centre-backs—alongside Sami Hyypiä and Virgil van Dijk—to be named in the PFA Team of the Year. He also addressed claims of inconsistency after an old clip resurfaced showing him once ranking Salah among the club’s top three players. Carragher admitted he later “changed his mind,” citing off-field issues earlier this season.

Back in December, Salah publicly criticized the club, accusing them of “throwing him under the bus” over limited playing time under Arne Slot. He was briefly dropped from the squad and has since confirmed he will leave the club at the end of the campaign, with Liverpool already searching for a replacement as he prepares to depart on a free transfer.

Meanwhile, former manager Jürgen Klopp has weighed in on Salah’s exit, admitting it will be extremely difficult for anyone to match his 255-goal record. However, Klopp suggested that Hugo Ekitike could come close over time if he stays at Anfield long enough, though he emphasized that Salah’s numbers remain extraordinary and hard to replicate.
