Liverpool reappoint former goalkeeper Lonergan in a new role

It’s not often a former player returns to a club in a completely new role, but that’s exactly the case with Andy Lonergan, who has quietly rejoined Liverpool as part of the coaching staff.

The ex-goalkeeper, a member of the club’s 2019–20 Premier League-winning squad, is now working behind the scenes with the women’s team—marking a full-circle moment in his long career. Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com, the 42-year-old admitted that even navigating Melwood again was a challenge after so many changes, joking that he kept getting lost and even needed a sat-nav on his first day back.

Beyond the humour, Lonergan is fully embracing his new role as Liverpool FC Women’s goalkeeping coach—his first full-time coaching job after a 25-year playing career. He expressed his passion clearly, saying he loves working with goalkeepers and, in many ways, enjoys goalkeeping even more than football itself.

Interestingly, his previous spell at Liverpool already hinted at this transition. During his time at the club, he naturally took on a mentoring role within a goalkeeping group that included top talents, describing the experience as “like coaching” while helping younger players grow.

His admiration for Alisson also stood out, as he labelled him the greatest he’s ever seen.

Lonergan’s journey is made even more unique by his ties across Merseyside, having also played for Everton after leaving Liverpool. That added experience, along with his time in one of Jurgen Klopp’s most successful squads, now shapes his coaching approach—focused entirely on developing others.

He summed up his mindset perfectly, emphasizing that his goal is to give his goalkeepers the very best support, not to focus on himself.

For Liverpool, his return highlights the club’s continued effort to bring back former players—not just for sentiment, but because they truly understand the standards and culture required.
