Xabi Alonso is being linked with a potential appointment as Liverpool head coach ahead of next season.

The former Reds midfielder could take charge after a challenging 2025/26 campaign under Arne Slot, with the club currently struggling to stay in the race for a top-four finish. Alonso, 44, is currently unattached after reportedly ending his stint with Real Madrid in January.

The speculation originates from a well-known account on X (formerly Twitter) and has been loosely supported by a recent BILD report suggesting the Spaniard would consider a return to Anfield under the right circumstances.

While Alonso is understood to be highly regarded by Liverpool’s hierarchy, including Michael Edwards, there is still no concrete indication that a move is imminent.

However, with results continuing to go against Slot, talk of a possible managerial change is growing louder—especially if there is no major turnaround before the end of the season.

That said, discussing Slot’s future already may seem premature, particularly given the Premier League title he delivered in his debut campaign after arriving from Feyenoord.

There is also a view that his difficulties stem from squad limitations, such as a lack of pace in wide areas, and Liverpool’s struggles to fully adapt to the Premier League’s increasing physical demands and set-piece emphasis.

Still, the expectation remains that top-level managers must adjust quickly to evolving conditions, and so far, Slot’s response has not fully convinced.

As things stand, the pressure is mounting significantly on Arne Slot going into the remainder of the 2025/26 season.
